Hey guys, so I'm a little bais but I dig this chick and happy to finally have her on this blog talking about hair! Continuing with this awesome project we are going to talk about what went into the hairstyle that completed Kristen's insane look.
Tell us a little bit about you, for our readers who may not know you who are?
Hi Ya’ll! No, I’m not from Texas. :) Born and raised in Lake Havasu City, AZ. Shout out to the 928! I’m a Paul Mitchell the School of Phoenix Graduate! I’ve been in this AMAZING Hair Industry for almost 10 years, 8 years to be exact. & I’m obsessed! Hair is an art, as well as a self expression!
BWM: When approached with creating a character, how important is the hairstyle?
The hairstyle is SO important. Why? It all has to flow. In order for the character to come to life, all things play into affect. Hair, makeup, wardrobe etc.
BWM: What does the hairstyle say about the character?
The hairstyle says a lot about the character. Think about this... For example: If we have a character who is running from the cops (lol)...odds are, the actor, weather it’s a Guy or Girl, they aren’t going to have “Red Carpet” perfectly in place hair. I have to analyze the scene. These are some simple questions I ask myself before creating a look. Where does the scene take place? How will the character act, are they fighting/sleeping? Are they peaceful or in raged with anger?
BWM: Walk us through how you created Kristen's look?
I created Kristen’s look based on some of those questions above that I asked myself. Should I create a lived in look, or a villain badass chick look? The badass chick obviously won! I take direction very well. So working with the Director on his vision, really helps bring my vision to life.
Step by Step on how I created her look!
I first started by prepping her hair! Having a solid base is key! What I mean by base is ~ a foundation.
You wouldn’t build a house without a blueprint?
Right? Same with hair!
Kristen has beautiful hair, so it was an easy canvas to work with! I prepped her hair first with Dry Shampoo, which gives the hair a lot of added texture & grit. One of my favorite brands is Biotera, the Mint Scalp Refresh! It’s really awesome too for those in-between Shampoo days to help soak up any oil on your scalp.
I also applied a Working Hairspray, which helps me navigate & work through most of my styles. Lastly, a Texture Powder! Every girl should own this! VOLUME, VOLUME, VOLUME!
I started backcoming Kristen’s hair in the specific areas that I knew I wanted to stand out. I began a rope braid at the beginning of her hair line, & once I reached a certain point of liking, towards the back of her head, I started a basic 3 strand braid. I knew I wanted it to look “lived in”. After I completed the style, I ponytailed the ends off. Once I did that, I began to pull pieces apart, as if her hair had been tossed around a bit.
I always make sure to spray my hairstyles so that they hold in place! A firm Hairspray, or if the style calls for it, sometimes I use an Extra Firm Hold Hairspray...just always Hairspray! I’m always using Sebastian’s “Shaper Plus”. Because I’m obsessed!
BMW: How do you take this look from on screen to every day wear?
I would literally wear that hairstyle to dinner, but that's me. In her case if she wasn't feeling up to it, I would drop all the pony tails, finger through the hair and spray it with some shine spray. BAM! This would give her natural looking waves to stand out at any dinner party or event she sets foot in.
QUICK EVERY DAY TIP: Any piece... Can be created & turned into an evening style...it’s how you do it. Some great suggestions for evening wear: Buns. “When in doubt, bun it out.” No one will ever be mad at a bun! A high, low, or messy bun! It’s all how you style it!
Hey can I be invited to the dinner party!? - ;) This project has brought together so many talented people it's so awesome to go in-depth on their process. I hope you guys learned a lot! #barewithme, we have so much more in store for you.
